Types of Barcodes
DateCodeGenie® allows two types of barcodes to print on labels for menu items. Both types of barcodes have specific supported formats.
Fixed
A set number of digits that will print a barcode on a label that:
- Never change
- Are assigned to a menu item in the portal and your POS system to identify the retail price of the menu item
- Can be generated in the portal for a menu item
- Use the correct logarithmic formula based on the format used
- Uses one of the below supported formats:
- 12 digits (UPC-A)
- 13 digits (EAN-13)
- 14 digits (ITF-14 )
- Generate several fixed barcodes at one time.
Variable
A set number of digits that will print a unique barcode on each label that:
- Changes based on the weight and retail price of the menu item
- Require a PLU SLU and price per unit assigned to a menu item in the portal and your POS system to identify the menu item
- Requires the scale accessory
- Is generated and previews on the app to print on each label
- Use one of the below supported formats (See Variable Weight Barcodes Explained):
- 12 digit retail price (up to $99.99)
- 13 digit retail price (up to $999.99)
- 13 digit retail price (EAN-13) (up to $999.99)
- 12 digit weight (up to 99.99)

Barcodes must use one of the types and formats supported in order to print correctly on your labels.
